Acclaimed Australian artist and filmmaker George Gittoes visited the Australian Cinémathèque at GOMA for a special screening of his new documentary Snow Monkey 2015 and stayed on after the screening for a special Q&A and signed copies of his new monograph George Gittoes: Night Vision.
Snow Monkey documents Afghanistan after the retreat of foreign forces, at which time an internal power struggle begins. Focusing on Afghanistan’s children, it features a ’Mad Max’ world where a nine-year-old boy, who calls himself Steel, runs lower‑level organised crime. Snow Monkey is a beautiful, humane and deeply confronting story from one of documentary cinema’s most visionary directors.
Night Vision is also Gittoes’ personal journey through the war torn areas of Afghanistan and Iraq. Drawn from his writings, films and sketches of Afghanistan and Iraq, these paintings and drawings typify the artists passion and vision in bridging art, politics, suffering, violence and beauty.
